Quilt Labels – Iron-On & Sew-In Labels to Personalize
Why Every Quilt Needs a Label
Have you ever found a beautiful old quilt and wondered who made it? For most of quilting history, makers rarely signed their work. A label fixes that. Add your name, the name of the pattern, when it was finished, who it was made for and the occasion, and your quilt carries its story with it for generations. Our step-by-step guide on how to label a quilt covers what to include and plenty of ideas.
Types of Quilt Labels
Pre-printed labels. Missouri Star Labels of Love packs pair small pre-folded tags with larger write-in labels, and The Posy Collection’s digitally printed cotton labels come in designs for babies, pets, holidays, florals and more, with plenty of blank space for your message. Label panels let you cut out as many as you need.
Sew-in tags. Woven tags like our Featherweight “Sewn with Love” set are ready to tuck into a binding seam, with nothing to write.
Iron-on label designs. C&T’s Best-Ever Iron-On Quilt Labels books are full of designs you iron onto muslin or light fabric, then color in or embroider.
Printable fabric sheets. Quilt Label Fabric Sheets run through an inkjet printer, so you can type your message in any font or use one of the downloadable designs.
How to Personalize a Quilt Label
Our labels arrive ready for your words. We don’t print custom labels, but personalizing one at home takes only a few minutes:
- Write it. Use a permanent fabric marker like the Missouri Star Markers 2-pack or an archival pen such as a Pigma Micron. Iron a piece of freezer paper to the back of the label to keep the fabric from shifting while you write, then heat-set the ink with a dry iron. Find more in fabric pens and markers. Want prettier lettering? Learn it in Amy Latta’s hand-lettered quilt labels tutorial.
- Embroider it. Backstitch your name and the date with embroidery floss, or fill in an iron-on design with stitches. An embroidery machine makes quick work of names and dates too.
- Print it. Type your message on the computer and print it onto a fabric sheet made for inkjet printers.

How to Attach a Quilt Label
Write your message before you attach the label. The easiest method is to catch the label in the binding: finish the two sides that won’t be covered, pin it in a bottom corner on the back of the quilt, and hand stitch around the finished edges. When you sew the binding down, the raw edges are enclosed. Small folded tags simply go into the binding seam. For a quilt that’s already bound, turn the label’s raw edges under, press, and blind stitch it to the back.
Finish Your Quilt
A label is usually the last step. Find hangers, binding tools and more in our quilt finishing supplies, or browse quilt hangers and sleeves and bias binding to show off your finished quilt.
