What Makes Fabric Good for Clothes?
Quilting cotton is crisp and stable, which is perfect for piecing but can feel stiff in a garment. Apparel fabric is chosen for how it hangs and moves. When you shop for clothing fabric, look at three things: the fiber (cotton, linen, a blend or a synthetic), the weight (lighter fabrics drape, heavier ones hold structure) and the width (apparel fabric is often 54"–57" wide, so you may need less yardage than a quilting-cotton pattern suggests).
Apparel Fabrics You'll Find Here
- Essex linen – Robert Kaufman's cotton/linen blend with a soft, natural slub. Easy to sew, breathable and great for tops, dresses, pants, aprons and bags. Yarn-dyed versions have a heathered, two-tone look.
- Washed denim and chambray – indigo denim in several weights for jeans, skirts, jackets and overalls, and lighter chambray for shirts and dresses. Lighter weights (4.5–6.5 oz) suit shirts and dresses; heavier ones suit bottoms and jackets.
- Knits – cotton/spandex knit with stretch and recovery for tees, leggings and kids' clothes. Use a ballpoint needle and a stretch or zigzag stitch.
- Tulle – lightweight netting for tutus, petticoats, veils and costume layers.
Tips for Sewing Your First Garment
Start with a woven fabric such as Essex linen or chambray. They don't stretch, so they cut and sew much like the quilting cotton you already know. Prewash apparel fabric the same way you plan to launder the finished piece, because linen and denim can shrink. Press as you go, and finish your seams with a zigzag, serger or French seam so they don't fray in the wash.
